Julian Casablancas' "Phrazes for the Young" review

Singer, Julian Casablancas, of the popular rock band, The Strokes, releases new solo CD that's quite different from what fans are used to hearing...

After the third release of The Strokes album, "First Impressions of Earth," the band decided to take a break. But that didn't most of the members from making music.
All but lead guitarist, Nick Valensi, made solo albums. Though they did not meet the intensity and top charting Strokes, all music was fairly good.

In late October, "Phrazes for the Young" was released with a catchy single, "11th deminsion."
When I first heard the album, I was suprised to hear something so different. There are catchy tunes with lots of obvious 80's influence. It's basically all synthesizers, but put good use. For example, the song "Left and Right in the Dark" reminds me of a total flashback to 'Flock of Seagulls' hit "I Ran."

Strangley, there are songs that sound like a country song turned spacey. I'm not gonna hate on it cause after has feeling it. I liked this album. Though some songs bored me, but that may be cause I'm impatient. Otherwise, the album is good. Worth buying if you want to hear something different. Rock with a twist.

Relationships...ugh.

What a heck of a ride. Ups and downs with a bunch of random laugh and arguements.
I just don't get 'em. Does anyone?

I have the same re-occuring problem, well, arguement actually. We have been arguing about the same thing since the begining of our relationship.

What is it? No other than that girl I used to talk to long ago.

It's the only thing we manage to fight over. I am so sick of it, cause she says I get defensive about this same thing, but I only get mad because she can't seem to drop it. It goes away for awhile but comes back later.

WHAT DO I DO?

Bank Job

Holding up a bank in the Westfield.
I lost my mind.
...Out of time.

And the telephone rings.
A bells rung out.
...as they talk about...

Twenty-three people held hostage.
The blood is red.
...I shake my head.

I know I'm going down.
With a bang.
...What a shame.

To realize I've done wrong, I've really screwed up.
Out of luck.
...all for what?

Bullets loaded, and the guns cocked.
Say goodbye.
...Before I...

A peom in the style of Carl Sandburg

Just like your father, it didn't take much to keep you away.
A bottle of booze, regret, and the urge to give up.
Your better half was falling apart, but you didn't move me.
I've got too much soul for you.

The feeling of being wasted, trashed must be phenomenal.
I look forward to sitting on dirty sidewalk failing at everything yet managing to dig myself deeper.
Ruined. I supposed it's like father, like son.

I wish I had a father that could put me together again.
I wish I had a mother who cooked breakfast every morning.
I wish I had friends who could've prevented this.
I am nothing, just like my father.

Rap stars...what an embarrassment.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy rap music. But, I can not say today's rappers are truly talented. At least not all of them.
Most anyone can rhyme words together. I think rappers these days are getting too cocky about what they do when a 6 year old can take their place. And when a rapper is interviewed, they say that they really love music, it's their true calling, then brag about all the expensive crap they have. If real musicians would have been here to see this, they'd have a heart-attack. Small time rappers make no contribution to to music scene.
